Paragraphs Meet Canvas: Visual Templates Beyond Nodes in Drupal CMS

Your Paragraphs don't need a rewrite to join Drupal Canvas. Learn how to design paragraphs visually and bring years of structured content into Drupal CMS.

This session explores how Drupal sites built on Paragraphs can adopt Drupal Canvas, the visual page builder at the heart of Drupal CMS, without throwing away the structured content they already have.

Canvas Content Templates let site builders design how content looks, visually, by dragging Single Directory Components (SDCs) onto a canvas and mapping fields to component props. There is one catch: out of the box, Content Templates only work for nodes. Paragraphs, which power the structured content of thousands of Drupal sites, are left behind with Twig templates and custom theming.

We begin with how Canvas Content Templates work and why the node-only limitation matters for real projects: component-based landing pages, reusable content sections, and sites migrating to Drupal CMS with years of Paragraphs-based content.

Next, we introduce a solution that brings Canvas Content Templates to paragraphs. The session explains how it treats paragraphs as first-class Canvas citizens, so that each paragraph type gets its own visually designed template, and how those templates render automatically wherever the paragraph appears, including inside node-level Canvas templates.

Key Topics

  • How Canvas Content Templates work, and why they stop at nodes
  • Where Paragraphs fit in a Drupal CMS site
  • Designing paragraph templates in the Canvas editor:
    • Mapping paragraph fields to SDC component props
    • Handling list (enum) fields, dates, images and references
    • Previewing templates with generated sample content
  • Composing pages from paragraph templates:
    • Rendering paragraph reference fields inside node templates
    • Getting clean component markup without extra Drupal wrapper divs
  • Site builder workflows:
    • Creating templates from the Manage Display screen in one click
    • Bulk-creating templates for every paragraph type with Drush
  • Comparing the visual template approach with traditional Paragraphs theming across:
    • Site builder experience
    • Front-end consistency with a design system
    • Maintenance overhead
    • Migration effort
  • Incremental adoption strategies for existing Paragraphs-heavy sites moving to Drupal CMS
  • Current status of native Paragraphs support in Canvas and contribution opportunities

The session includes real-world examples and a live demonstration, taking a set of existing paragraph types from plain Drupal output to fully component-driven, visually designed templates, all without writing Twig.

Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to bring their existing Paragraphs content into the Canvas era, along with the tradeoffs and current limitations involved.

Your Paragraphs don't need a rewrite to join Canvas; they need a template.

Prerequisites

  • Working knowledge of Drupal site building
  • Familiarity with Drupal concepts such as:
    • Content types and fields
    • Paragraphs and paragraph types
    • View modes and Manage Display
  • Basic awareness of Drupal CMS and Drupal Canvas, helpful but not required
  • Some exposure to Single Directory Components (SDCs), helpful but not required
  • No coding experience is required to follow the demonstrations

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain how Canvas Content Templates work and why they are limited to nodes by default
  • Design visual templates for paragraph types in the Canvas editor
  • Map paragraph fields, including list, date, and media fields, to SDC component props
  • Compose node-level Canvas templates that render paragraphs through their own templates
  • Choose an incremental path for moving an existing Paragraphs-based site toward Drupal CMS and Canvas
  • Identify ways to contribute to native Paragraphs support in Drupal Canvas
