Beyond Chatbots: Building AI-Powered Experiences with Drupal

AI in Drupal can go far beyond adding a chatbot to a website. This session explores practical ways Drupal’s structured content, search, and extensibility can work with AI to create more useful and personalized digital experiences.

AI is changing how users discover, understand, and interact with content. For Drupal developers, the opportunity is not simply to add a chatbot, but to think about where AI can genuinely improve a content-driven experience.

In this session, I’ll explore practical AI use cases that fit naturally into Drupal, including intelligent search, content understanding, automated tagging, personalization, accessibility, and conversational experiences.

I’ll also share lessons from my experience working with Drupal through Google Summer of Code and later building AI-powered applications outside the Drupal ecosystem. The goal is to look at AI from a developer’s perspective: where it helps, where it can introduce problems, and how to approach an AI-enabled Drupal feature without making the architecture unnecessarily complex.

Attendees will leave with practical ideas for identifying good AI use cases in Drupal and a clearer understanding of how Drupal’s existing strengths can complement AI systems.
